Economy & army upkeep

Build an economy that can support your growing army. Learn food upkeep, march costs, gold commitments, and sustainable expansion.

The army eats before the next upgrade

Every troop consumes food per hour. Troops on a march consume twice their ordinary upkeep. Food production must support that ongoing cost alongside the resources spent on new training.

Calculate your garrison’s base upkeep

Multiply each troop count by its per-unit food upkeep and add the results. For example, 1,000 Archers consume 9,000 food per hour at home; on a march, those Archers consume 18,000 per hour before any special effects.

The example is a planning calculation, not a complete production forecast. Governors, research, controlled resource tiles, and active items affect the economy.

Prioritize the next bottleneck

  • Food: check the upkeep increase before training more troops.
  • Lumber and iron: compare the costs of your intended unit mix.
  • Stone: budget for walls, city upgrades, and Catapults.
  • Gold: keep room for research, heroes, and promotion.

Build for replacement, not just recruitment

A city that can afford one army may struggle to replace losses. Train within your production capacity and develop transport routes between your cities. The Market helps trade resources; Warehouse protection helps preserve part of your stores during an attack.
