The Open Gate

“A harbor for the bold.”

From Friesland to Westreach

The descendants of House Maren sailed from Friesland with crews drawn from rival households. Their elders had argued over ports and obligations before exile made them depend on the same ships. On reaching Corvaine, they established landing places where protection rested on shared harbor rules rather than a visitor’s pedigree. Westreach’s later Harbor Compact renewed that founding lesson. The state’s welcome began with people who knew how little an impressive family name could offer on an unfamiliar shore.

The Open Gate

Westreach grew around landing places where sailors, traders, and displaced families brought news from beyond Corvaine. Its early rulers built their reputation by offering protection to strangers willing to work, trade, and obey the harbor laws. Some of its proudest houses began with little more than a name entered in a dockside ledger.

When raiders threatened the coast, rival captains joined their crews to defend the port. Their agreement became the Harbor Compact: no private dispute would take precedence over the safety of the town. Westreach's citadel was built with contributions from those same captains and merchants.

The fractured kingdom has made every arriving ship a source of opportunity and suspicion. Arms, refugees, and competing royal claimants all pass through its gates. Westreach can prosper by welcoming the wider world, but a ruler who sells its safety for a profitable bargain risks breaking the compact that made the state possible.

Every state carries its own history. In Law of Kings, players build cities, form alliances, and contest citadels within the same persistent realm. Read the citadel guide for gameplay rules.
