The Workers' Oath

“By hammer and hand.”

ANCESTRAL HOMELAND · SWABIA

From Swabia to Emberlands

House Kessel’s surviving heirs traveled from Swabia beside smiths, apprentices, and workshop families who had once served their court. The journey left noble descendants and laborers dependent on the same repaired wheels and tools. In Corvaine, their first settlement promised that craft would earn a voice as well as payment. Later rulers forgot the bargain. When the furnaces went dark in protest, the workers of the Emberlands were demanding recognition of an obligation carried from their founders’ old homeland.

The Workers' Oath

The Emberlands earned its name from the furnace light that once colored the night above its workshops. Its smiths supplied tools, hinges, armor, and blades across Corvaine. Behind every celebrated sword stood miners, charcoal burners, apprentices, and families whose names rarely reached the royal court.

During a long campaign, the crown demanded more weapons while wages went unpaid. The workshops extinguished their furnaces together. Soldiers came to enforce the order, only to discover that their own equipment could not be repaired without the people they had been sent to threaten. A settlement restored payment and established the Workers' Oath, sworn by every new lord before the citadel gates.

Now rival powers court the Emberlands with promises of protection and urgent contracts. Its people have heard urgent promises before. They will build for a ruler who values their labor, but the state remembers how quickly a king's army becomes helpless when the hands beneath it close.

Every state carries its own history. In Law of Kings, players build cities, form alliances, and contest citadels within the same persistent realm. Read the citadel guide for gameplay rules.
