“Leave a light for the lost.”
The motto of Duskhollow
From Upper Lorraine to Duskhollow
House Avelin’s royal descendants came from Upper Lorraine after losing much of their household on the roads into exile. Those who reached Corvaine did so because strangers offered directions, food, and a place to rest without demanding proof of rank. The founders of Duskhollow preserved those strangers’ names beside their own family record. Generations later, covered lanterns guided relief carters through the quarantine. The gesture recalled an ancestral debt: every arrival carried the memory of someone who had left a door open.

The Lantern Road
Duskhollow's valleys fall into shadow early, and travelers once feared the narrow roads after sundown. That fear became something harsher during an outbreak of fever, when surrounding authorities sealed the roads and abandoned several settlements to hunger as well as sickness.
A handful of carters continued bringing food and medicine through the checkpoints. Families hung covered lanterns to guide them along the safest paths. Many who survived later helped build Duskhollow's citadel, placing a lantern above its gate in memory of the strangers who refused to leave them unseen.
The old quarantine is long over, but the suspicion it created has not vanished. Since the king's death, fugitives and defeated soldiers have again sought shelter along the lantern road. Duskhollow must decide whom to trust while rival lords accuse it of harboring their enemies. Its next ruler faces a difficult inheritance: offering refuge without allowing the vulnerable to become someone else's shield.
Every state carries its own history. In Law of Kings, players build cities, form alliances, and contest citadels within the same persistent realm. Read the citadel guide for gameplay rules.
