House Serra’s descendants came from Romagna in a company that included accused fugitives, displaced villagers, and households divided by old disputes. Before entering Corvaine, the elders agreed that each traveler would answer for their own deeds rather than inherit a neighbor’s condemnation. Their settlement in Silverfen gave that principle a home, even when later officials tried to set it aside. The Fen Articles renewed the founders’ promise. The state’s paths offered a beginning to royal heirs and ordinary families alike.
The Hidden Causeways
Silverfen's first settlements stood on patches of firm ground among marshes and reed beds. Its people linked them with narrow causeways that strangers often mistook for dead ends. Refugees, deserters, and families escaping old feuds found new lives there, provided they respected the communities that guided them through.
When a royal magistrate tried to collect entire households for the crimes of a few fugitives, the settlements refused to identify their neighbors. Instead, they offered to bring the accused to a public hearing. The compromise became the Fen Articles, which placed responsibility on a person's actions rather than their birthplace or kin.
Corvaine's collapse has filled the paths with newcomers once again. Some seek sanctuary; others hope to turn concealment into power. Silverfen's citadel stands at the heart of a state whose trust cannot be mapped from its walls. Its next ruler must learn the difference between giving someone a second beginning and helping them escape what they owe.
